Gennady Troshkov « Metaphysical Technologism »

«East Meets West Gallery» curator Tatiana Paleeva is proud to present «Metaphysical Technologism», a solo exhibition of works by artist Gennady Troshkov, at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Arts from September 17 to October 25, 2013. The exhibit is part of the parallel program of the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, and showcases a retrospective of the artist’s work from 1975 to 2013.
It is not easy to associate Gennady Troshkov with any of the existing groups or movements on the contemporary Russian art scene. He creates his own world inhabited by heroes and images which only he can comprehend, where we are only allowed to guess or imagine. The formal label of «technologism» can be really applied in the cases where those images have evidence of structure and when they have become completely delinked with real objects.
The main feature of the last years of Gennady’s mature work is continuous experimentation, a search for new ways of connecting shapes and materials. His form reveals its plasticity in ongoing change of using different art genres and new materials. Sculptural forms, once soldered into a rigid bronze, now appear in the fragile ceramics, and fragile plaster reliefs are executed in solid wood and plastic.
The exhibit will feature his paintings, drawings, sculpture and arts & crafts. One hall is dedicated to book illustrations created by the artist in the 1970s and 1980s; the others will contain works rarely seen in contemporary art today such as relief and tapestry, as well as more common nowadays materials and techniques: mixed media (watercolor, gouache and collage on foam), watercolor on plastic, watercolor on ceramic in original artist technique and others.
Over the past two years Gennady Troshkov participated in the International art project by East Meets West Gallery «The Power of Water», Moscow Polytechnic Museum, 2012, «Metaphysics in the Fine Arts» dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artists, Moscow House of Artists, 2012, and «Born to fly … and crawl», State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, 2013.
