East Meets West Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibit “Hans Mendler’s Mythology”, as part of the XVIth  “Art-Manege 2011”, held from November 30 to December 4, 2011 at the Manege Exhibition hall, Moscow.

Hans Mendler is known in Germany and Europe as a painter and a sculptor. His paintings were presented in Moscow for first time during the show “Deep Flow” at the New Manege exhibition hall in 2010. In 2011, we again invited him to Moscow to participate in the environmental art/culture project “Organica”. His personal attention to environmental issues is reflected in the choice of painting subjects, in the choice of wood as the only material for his sculptures, as well as in the way he paints and processes the material.

Hans works in different styles and uses various techniques: oil, acrylics, Chinese ink, collages and even his fingers. Most of his paintings are abstract; some of them almost monochrome, but others are painted with lively, even wild colors. Sometimes an exuberant palette will flow freely into quiet tones, and vice versa; nevertheless, the change always seems natural and thoughtfully composed. And this special creative mood applies to all genres in which he works.

His works have a striking ability to balance between abstract and figurative art, often easily switching from one type to another. As an alchemist, Hans loves to experiment with color, shape, texture and material. And he creates his own unique characters on the basis of ancient mythology, using “primitive” methods of working wood, primarily a saw and an ax. Ironically, these methods and his classically painted wooden sculptures create a deeply contemporary feeling in the works today.
