“A Woman of my Imagination”. “Nude: Nude, Nude, Nudo, Nu, Desnudo (end of XX – beginning of XXI century)” IV
On November 16 the East Meets West Gallery and the design center ARTPLAY will open the last exhibition from the series of “Nude: Nudo, Nu, Desnudo (end of XX – the beginning of the XXI century)”under the title “A Woman of my Imagination”.
This exhibit combines graphics, paintings and sculptures of Russian contemporary artists: Suren Aivazyan, Maxim Aksenov, Hadji Murad Alikhanov, Umit Beck, Clara Golitsyna, Victor Korneev, Andrey Korovin, Alexey Lantsev, Olga Muravina, Vladimir Pankratov, Sergey Sobolev and Boris Cherstvy.
The history of the artist’s relationship to nudity is quite diverse. By the second half of the twentieth century, the post-modernist tendencies to deconstruct the human body, the creation of a culture of simulacra and the so-called “crisis of anthropology” had already prevailed throughout the world. As a result of these trends an artifact, not a person, had become the main figure of art.
The first decade of the twenty-first century demonstrates some boredom with the negative movements of post-modernism, reflected among other things in the rehabilitation of corporality in the west. Mainly it was expressed through interest in sexuality, pain, and death, thanks to Nietzsche and Freud, but also through a more spiritual and humanistic relationship both to a person and to his body. These trends can be traced in the variety of exhibits on the topic of nudity which took place in the last decade at the Russian museums of the first rank, such as the State Hermitage Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art and the Tretyakov Gallery. “The body is the main indicator of the processes taking place in society, in the perception of the person by the society and himself” M. Chekmareva (2015).
The Russian artists presented by The East Meets West Gallery work in different styles and often keep to the mainstream of post-modernist principles. But they know their limits and the image of a woman in their works appears as a modern goddess worthy of admiration.
